As I write this, I got home from a walk.
The sun was out, it was warm. Perfect for a nude walk, but, being in a populated area, that’s not always an option. (Haven’t we all been there…)
When I got home, I was close to boiling, and I didn’t know how fast I should get out of my clothes. My body couldn’t get rid of the heat that had accumulated inside the textile prison, and only after a few nude minutes I actually started to feel better.
At that point I wondered: is everyone feeling that way?
Habit
Most people are in the habit of wearing clothes. All the time. Even in bed (insert scary feeling). I suspect that those people are not affected by the same heat-sensation that I had gone through after the walk. Or at least not that much. They trained their body (or rather, their mind) to ignore this problem (for the most part). And the part that can’t be ignored is going to be fixed by switching on the air conditioner or a fan.
Nude-aficionados probably have ‘trained’ their bodies and minds to lose all that excess heat by releasing it immediately, or not even ‘storing’ it – which is possible when you’re nude. Not so much when you have the fabrics all around. And that, I’m sure of it, made me get that hot flash as I came back home.
Maybe I’m entirely wrong about this (correct me if you know better), but does this make any kind of sense?
More and more I am convinced that nudity would solve a lot of climate problems, if enough people would go for it and stick to it. Look at damage done, and pollution created by the fashion industry. Look at the power consumption of air conditioning. Look at climate change. This place appears to move towards the situation as I described in “Nude in Space“! Parts of the world overheating, and those who can afford it, hide in air conditioned cities, making the situation outside even worse.
Let’s hope it doesn’t get that far. And let’s also hope we can find some kind of leverage to make the nude life more accepted.
This happens to me as well when I come back from a day in the sun at the beach. Even after the short drive home in my airconditioned car, my body is still hot. Nothing better than to get fully naked.
It is so amazing that people don’t want to accept (believe that).
Well, if you’re nude a higher percentage of the sweat you produce will be exposed to the air so you’ll cool more efficiently. that’s just laws of physics. If you’re clothed, what you wear’ll have a lot to do with how you feel. IMO, linen is by far the best to wear if you’re stuck wearing clothing in the heat. Back to your point, when you got home and took your clothes off, the sweat on your body that hadn’t yet evaporated started to. So of course you felt better.
As far as climate goes, humidity has a lot to do with how hot you get and how much you sweat in response. The drier it is, the higher the temps can be while still staying comfortable. Unfortunately, air conditioners that allow you to choose how much power consumption goes to cooling and how much to dehumidification have not been available for decades. However, if you live in an area that where relative humidity nearly always rises with the temperature (ex: the US east coast) there is an easy fix that will keep you comfortable while keeping your electric bill down: Undersize your air conditioning unit. If you’re told you “need” 10,000 btuh (2.9kWh) buy 7,000 (2.0kWh). if you’re told you “need” one big 13,300btuh (3.9kWh) unit, buy TWO little 5,000 btuh (1.5kWh) units and place them at opposite ends of the area you wish to cool. There’re boring laws-of-physics reasons why this is true. I’m happy to explain if anyone wants to know.
Back to topic: The point is if everyone did this a lot less electricity would be used and we’d all still be comfortable, ESPECIALLY if we dispensed with clothing.
I have to wear a shirt while I’m working, but I’m still able to keep the air conditioning a few degrees warmer than I would if I had to wear a full set of clothing.
Absolutely clear and valid points. A few years ago I had to do a Lot of driving for work and the summer was brutal (30C and more for weeks). Usually, driving nude was just fine like that, I remember I only had to add some car air conditioning once or twice. Imagine how that would have felt with clothes on.
Our country is know for being very humid and yes, it can get hot very quickly that way.
Thanks for your extensive comment, Anton!
