Isn&#8217;t it bizarre how much difference there is between perceiving a female or a male body? This has to change!!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Nude Photo in Gallery Window Gets a Rise Out of Neighbors<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><time> Cait Munro, Thursday, July 24, 2014 <\/time><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66509\" src=\"http:\/\/res.artnet.com\/news-upload\/2014\/07\/kenmare-nude-750x562.jpg\" alt=\"The photograph in question by Bek Andersen, in the window of Rivington Design House. Photo via Bowery Boogie\" width=\"750\" height=\"562\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lower East Side gallery <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rivingtondesignhouse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rivington Design House<\/a> is in hot water with its neighbors over a photograph of a nude man displayed in its front window. Despite the fact that the image is not sexual or vulgar in any way, neighbors accused the gallerists of being unaware of or indifferent to the fact that many children pass by the Kenmare Street storefront every day.<\/p>\n<p>The nude photo is the work of artist <a href=\"http:\/\/bekandersen.com\/photography-and-motion\/photography\/portfolio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bek Andersen<\/a>, and is part of a show entitled\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bekandersen.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Clothed Female\/Naked Male<\/a>,\u201d which seeks to\u00a0shift the paradigm of nudity in art. \u201c<span style=\"color: #1a1a1a;\">There is nothing pornographic or offensive happening in that photo,\u201d Andersen <span style=\"color: #1a1a1a;\"> told <a href=\"http:\/\/gothamist.com\/2014\/07\/23\/photograph_of_naked_man_upsets.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gothamist<\/a>. \u201c<\/span>It\u2019s a portrait of a man. He is naked, but doing nothing indecent. We see naked women all the time in photos where they are highly sexualized and people don\u2019t notice because they are desensitized.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The backlash from community members only confirms Andersen\u2019s point\u2014that we are so accustomed to artistic nudity being limited to portrayals of women that we find it offensive when the male body is put on similar display.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the wave of complaints, there are no reports that the work in question has been removed from the storefront.
