Yes. It happens. All around us. The thought that naturists stand for, that every body is a good body, isn’t supported nor carried by everyone.
As I was listening to the November 2009 episode of the Naturist Living Show podcast, a show I can really recommend, I heard so many things that struck me and rang my bells that I had to write this post about it.
So, what’s the buzz?
In the podcast I heard (among other things) a story about a young woman who apparently looked good and healthy, who was incredibly influenced by the media and their unrealistic goals of “beauty”. She had decided to contact a plastic surgeon who would make all kinds of fake alterations to her body to make her “beautiful”.
There would be breast implants, a “tummy tuck” and a few other “improvements”, which she wanted to get done as a “surprise” for her husband who was away. (Image is not of said young woman.)
Now really… who would want to improve a body when there’s nothing wrong with it? And that only because the outside world is proclaiming that you are not good enough unless you look like Kate Moss, to name one of the super models that clearly are the basis of existence for many woman.
It’s a shame and it angers me tremendously that wonderful people with what, a flaw, a wrinkle, a tummy, stretch marks… that such good, healthy, beautiful people feel compelled to obey the words of a bunch of lunatics who are only after their money. Because that, of course, is the name of the game. Beauty products that cost hands full of money. Plastic surgery isn’t the cheapest kind either. And for what? To be turned into unreal, plastic versions of themselves?
People who have no wrinkle, who are “industrial beauties” and whose cheeks probably will crack when they try to laugh (if their plastified cheeks actually allow them to laugh)?
Stop the plastification of people!
Real people are much better in my opinion. The true value shouldn’t be put on someone’s outside. That’s not going to last, no matter how much cash you throw at plastic surgeons, pill mongers and diet advisers. In my view it’s much healthier to cultivate your inner beauty.
It’s something that will cost you less and bring you much more. Be beautiful the naturist’s way. Trust me, there are more people like us, with our flaws and flabs, than there are industrial grade beauties. We’ll outnumber you always. And we’re far happier.
The weather here in Europe has been appalling for naturists and nudists alike when it comes to going outside. Cold, wind, rain, all those goodies – and a lack of sunshine.
Scenes like this one have been happening here more than once over the past month. I’m probably not the only one who starts to feel vitamin D deprived, and that’s horrible. It’s sad when we have to go without our favourite source of that vitamin.
Of course you know that one.
The sun. What else?
There are alternatives, like fish, wheat bread and such but…
nothing beats soaking up the sun with all of our skin. Unfortunately I have no good cure for a lack of sun. If however you are looking for good ways to be naked while the sun is not around…
You could meet up with naturist friends either at your home or in theirs. Get together naked, have a good time. Talk, watch a good film, interact – and leave your smartphone in the pocket of your clothes!
You might consider a visit to a sauna. Saunas are great places to be naked, at least over here in Europe.
In a sauna you can meet other naked-minded people there; perhaps even make new friends.
A great way to be nude as well is of course in your home. You may need some precautions because there are always the very curious ones who think it’s their obligation to stare into your living room and point out what’s wrong. And you bet that those are the same people who think being naked, even inside your own four walls, is wrong!
Glass curtains can be your friend here. It blocks the view from outside quite effectively and if someone is still able to peek inside an accuse you of being an exhibitionist it won’t be hard to convince others that this person is a peeping Tom. Or Tina.
If you don’t like having those curtains up all the time there are ways of clipping them up if you want your privacy and easily taking them down as soon as you’ve had enough of being naked. (Inserting time to laugh here.)
I hope that people who are deprived of their nudity can find some solace and tips in this post. If you can, take a vacation to a warm and sunny place where nudity is okay. This however isn’t within everyone’s reach, and for those I tried to come up with some viable and not too expensive alternatives.
Most textile-oriented people won’t agree with this statement but naked is healthier. I feel like living proof and I let me tell you why. First have a look at this picture:
…do you see something odd? If not, look again. (If you have to look again you’re still learning to be a naturist as you probably only saw a penis.) I saw it immediately as soon as it appeared. There’s a bump on the right side. It’s an inguinal hernia, also known as groin rupture. People who are comfortable with seeing and knowing their own naked body will notice and acknowledge such strange occurrences much sooner than clothes people. I am convinced of that.
Doesn’t mean that I’m happy that I see it because this probably means surgery (be it minor surgery according to the doctor) and I haven’t been in a hospital since almost 40 years.
Show a man with a gun… it’s called action. Show a man with a dick… it’s called indecent.
There’s something wrong with the way Americans have come to accept almost every aspect of the human condition except for the most natural one. We’ve accepted guns, drugs and violence, yet refuse to accept bare breasts and genitalia.
Put a man killing and raping women in a movie and it may go on to win an Oscar. Put a naked woman on the screen, and it won’t be allowed a nomination (take “Blue is the Warmest Color” for example).
We’ve become so desensitized to everything, but the one thing that makes us human. We’ve come to accept almost every negative aspect of human nature, yet refuse to condone the most natural state a human being can be — the nude.
With the recent craze of the health benefits of sleeping naked, I couldn’t help but wonder if there were more benefits we’re missing out on by always covering up.
Are nudists colonies onto something? Are we depriving ourselves of essential nutrients and benefits due to our perversion to the human body?
What would happen if we accepted our bodies the same way we accepted everything else? What would happen if we stopped covering up and started stripping down? What would happen if we all just let our bodies hang out in the open and didn’t hide them in dark worlds of porn, indecency and fetishes?
According to Matthew Westra, a psychology professor at Longview Community College in Missouri, “Nudity is a taboo in America because we primarily equate nudity or nakedness with sexuality and we have taboos about sexuality.”
This association between nudity and sex is exacerbated by the use of strip clubs and pornography that have come to represent a wrongful or sinful type of behavior that is only achieved in the nude.
There’s no denying Americans are prudish by nature. There’s also no denying, however, that if we could get past our childish perversions and accept nudity as a basic and natural human form, there would be a lot less “deviousness” and fewer obsessions with the human body — and we could all just stop caring so much about it.
When clothes come off, so do the stigmas
Things are only taboo because we make them that way. People only go searching for something they can’t have because its “illicit” status makes it intriguing.
If men, however, were exposed to nudity on a normal, everyday basis, they wouldn’t fantasize and obsess over it the way 14-year-olds do at the sight of their first breast.
According to Dr. Conrad Manning in his paper “Virtues of Nakedness: Physical & Psychological Health,” “By making nakedness an ordinary, matter-of-fact, common experience, unassociated with sexuality, the unhealthy prurient interest in pornography would be considerably lessened.”
Imagine if men were desensitized to the female body. Imagine if they didn’t feel the need to rip a woman’s clothes off to fulfill some fantasy they’ve created in their minds.
Imagine if men stopped putting all their time and energy into seeing women naked and just learned to live side-by-side with them?
Fewer clothes, fewer problems
Imagine if we lived in a world where bodies weren’t hidden under layers while models with “perfect bodies” ran around half naked? Imagine if we all just looked at each other the way God made us without any implications or idealized notions of the perfect body?
According to Manning, it’s our clothing that creates our insecurities and inability to accept and love each other the way we should.
We put materialistic value on the human form and it’s created mental illness along with body dismorphia and an undesirable environment for humans to live and communicate within.
Early exposure means early acceptance
Like anything, most of our neuroses and phobias form during childhood. But what if we’d grown up in a nude household? What if we’d been taught from a young age nudity is natural and the human body is beautiful?
Studying these effects in their book, “The Naked Child: Growing Up Without Shame,” Dennis Craig Smith and William Sparks found that children exposed to nudity from a young age became either unfazed by the human body later in life and sometimes, psychologically stronger because of it.
More studies were done on this topic. One study published in the Journal of Social Psychology by Marilyn D. Story examined 264 children and their parents. The results proved children raised around nudity grew up with a higher body self-concept.
According to Story, “coming from a nudist family played a more significant role in the children’s positive self body-image than their race, gender, or area of the country in which they lived.”
Baring your body means banning bacteria
In another paradox, humans donned clothing to keep away parasites and filth, yet only created breeding grounds for different types of infections and disease.
While clothes may seem like a way to keep the dirt off, we’re really only harming ourselves more.
In the study “A Naked Ape Would Have Fewer Parasites” published by the University of Reading, “Lyme Disease deer ticks can grab onto our sweaters and sea lice can sneak into our bathing suit crotches.
Cinched-up belts, ties, and clothes impede breathing. Men’s snug pants raise testicle temperature, lowering sperm count and fertility.”
Along with infertility rates and Lyme disease, clothes also contribute to yeast infections and UTIs in women. They are creating problems by trying to eradicate them.
Naked today, alive tomorrow
What if I told you shoes were causing you to lose brain function? What if not wearing shoes meant decreasing your risk for Alzheimer’s? What if stripping down the clothes meant adding up the years?
According to Dr. Norman Doidge, “Going shoeless is now recognized as an anti-Alzheimer’s, brain-boosting activity because the sole sensation entices your brain into growing extra, efficient neuron connections.”
It seems arbitrary, but walking around barefoot increases brain flexibility. It doesn’t just make you feel young again, it makes your brain feel young again.
And do you know that too much sitting around isn’t good? Don’t worry, this is not going to be a post about all the things that are good for you because what’s good for one doesn’t have to be good for the other.
It’s just something I want to draw attention to because it’s something we probably almost all are doing. Sitting too much.
I noticed this with myself too. I used to get home after a day at work (where I mostly sit) and after dinner or whatever the time is I would sit (!) down at my computer and check mails, share and read on the few social media that still allow nudity and then I’d write.
The Naked Crow books require a lot of writing, so they also require a lot of computer work. (No, I’m not doing all that writing by hand!) And computer work is usually done sitting, until I had a great idea. Well, I think it was great then and I still think it is:
I got a simple high bar-table and put my laptop on it. I now switch my computer work between sitting at the desktop (above) and standing at the laptop (left). And I can tell you that wasn’t easy at first. My legs had to get used to this VERY much. In the beginning I could barely stand for 10 minutes. Now I’m doing better. I can stand at the laptop for 2 hours without a problem. The thing to remember is that you occasionally have to move about, use your legs. Otherwise you get painful feet and knees. It’s the joints that then get the rough times.
I don’t know if you have experienced something like this already. If you did and you went for a solution, good for you. If you didn’t yet, maybe this post stimulates to think about sitting and how you could avoid doing it too much.

Vitamin D? And here you are thinking that this is a blog about nudism. Well, it is. And vitamin D is an important part of nudism. Bear and bare with me. What does Wikipedia say about vitamin D?
Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble secosteroids responsible for enhancing intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate. In humans, the most important compounds in this group are vitamin D3 (also known as cholecalciferol) and vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol).
Okay, not very impressive nor clear. But when we also see this:
Although vitamin D is commonly called a vitamin, it is not actually an essential dietary vitamin in the strict sense, as it can be synthesized in adequate amounts by most mammals exposed to sunlight.
then things suddenly look different. Sunlight. A vitamin you get through sunlight? Wow, that’s easy “food” then! But – take notice. Exposed to sunlight doesn’t mean that your clothes take care of it. It’s the skin that picks up the sunlight and transforms that into vitamin D. Hey, do you see a link to nudism? The more skin is exposed to the sun, the more vitamin D you pick up without doing anything else than being out in the sun!
As you see, there’s not much to taking in vitamins this way. It’s healthy, pleasurable and you can read something interesting too.
You can, of course, also actively go about and enjoy the sunshine in another way.
An interesting observation in Medical News Today is: “People who are exposed to normal quantities of sunlight do not need vitamin D supplements because sunlight promotes sufficient vitamin D synthesis in the skin.” Again, this does require that the skin is exposed to take in the sunlight. The same web page also notes: “Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine found that higher vitamin D levels in healthy individuals have a significant impact on the genes that are involved in several biologic pathways associated with illnesses, including cancer, autoimmune disease, cardiovascular disease and infectious diseases.”
And since we’re talking sunshine: did you know that sunscreen is one of the reasons that people get too little vitamin D even when they’re out in the sun? Sunscreen prevents the skin to take in the sunlight because of the UV blockers that it contains. You can go out in the sun without sunscreen, but only if you’re sensible about it.
Stay inside on the hot part of the day. It’s too warm to do anything anyway, so take a nap or read something.
Stay out of the sun during the noon hours when the sun is hottest. Also a parasol won’t help, UV goes through that.
Get used to the sun in smaller doses. Don’t go from 0 to 60 in no time, give your skin time to start absorbing UV without getting burnt.
Sunburn is the reason for most skin cancers. Skin cancer happens least with people who have outside jobs; their skin is used to sunlight and has a resistance already. When you’re pale (and I look at myself too), take care. Don’t over do it. And then you won’t need sunscreen. Hello. Have you ever considered the health benefits of being nude as much as possible?
Now, you may state that clothes are healthy as they keep you warm when it’s cold, and everyone will fully agree with you. But what about the times when it’s not cold? When the temperature is just right for (or too much for even) t-shirts or less, for shorts or swimming trunks? So many people then still cover themselves up with textile.
If you put a plaster cast on a broken arm the skin starves for Vitamin D, the muscles weaken due to strangled range of motion, the nerve synapses depress to a whimper of their former joy. Twenty-first century hominids? We shroud our entire skin palette except for face, neck and hands – we obliterate symbiosis with the planet.
The Sun Helps Clear Up Psoriasis Psoriasis is a skin disease which turns your skin purple. Those suffering from psoriasis are treated by dermatologists by having the patient sit under a flourescent light, simulating the rays of the sun. Going nude does the exact same thing. It’s cheaper, plus it’s a lot more fun.
Maybe you’ve wondered why nudists are so often depicted as healthy “despite being naked”. Well, that’s exactly the reason: they are healthy (healthier) because they’re naked so much. All the skin is allowed to breathe instead of only hands and face.
Also, you have less hassle with clothes. Now what’s that to do with health? How about less stress about what to wear, and less need for laundry detergent (which is good for the environment)?
Also, when meeting other nude people, the encounter is healthier. There is no difference between a business tycoon or a factory worker when they’re both in their birthday suit. It cuts away any class barrier that might be there.
I think that one of the biggest problems of today is that people are closed-minded “by nature”. By their environment, by the dogmas that are tossed onto them, by interpretations of religion, by the sad but true conviction that nudity is bad. “Sinful” even, as nudism/naturism these days is so often 1 on 1 connected to sex and porn, while it has nothing to do with that.
Being nude for no other reason than to be nude means being in direct and constant touch with your skin, and that again means being in touch with nature itself, something that most people these days seem to be scared of, or have forgotten/repressed. If something is not sterilised and wrapped in 3 layers of plastic, it’s unhealthy. Many kids in schools these days don’t dare to drink milk from a cow, because “real milk comes from the factory”. You don’t get your hands dirty any more, you wear gloves and a ton of protective clothing that needs to be cleaned afterwards.
Getting dirty when you’re nude means you wash yourself afterwards. That’s all there is to it. No attack on nature with the detergents needed for cleaning clothes, no disposable things (unless you need something to stay safe and/or in one piece).
There should nothing wrong with being naked, as long as others aren’t bothered by it. Let’s start with being nude in nature, in an uninhibited way. Everyone’s seen a naked body, and when you meet someone who’s nude you can see that this person literally has nothing to hide.

Nudism, Compassion and Spirituality
Friends, wish to share some insights about Naturism and the spiritual values associated with it…What is needed is a subtle shift in the way we perceive things.
The sweat that we have over the body (as the body is covered with clothes all the time) is the cause of various ailments and when the fresh air & light touches the body, it revitalizes the entire body.
We need to cover the body with clothes during extreme weather conditions and when we do our activities in the world but, we cover the body fully even when clothes aren’t required…This is one of the major reason why we suffer from multiple diseases / ailments.
Nude Sun bathing is very good for health and (if we can sun bath during for 1-2 hours between 7-9 am / 4.30 – 6.30 pm) we need not visit hospitals forever!
Being nude is compassion towards ourselves; being compassionate to our body and mind by not harming them…Love / compassion towards the world in the first place, includes this aspect of loving our body as well…
Spiritual side of Nudism: All of us here are spiritual, I mean everyone of us!
Being naked implies that we are getting used to living naturally, the way we have come to this world and slowly, we will let go of the inhibitions that we initially have towards nudism.
The attraction & desire one gets while seeing someone dressed nicely / scantily, will not be there while looking at someone who is naked…That way, being nude, we get rid of the inhibitions and other undesirable qualities and instill a sense of peace in others mind as well…
contrary to the popular belief, Nudism is part of ancient spiritual traditions / practices, and its been practiced in various degrees, even to this day…Many of our saints / sages (including women) have remained nude because it helped them to keep good health and for their spiritual betterment.
To start with, we do away with liking / thinking about the kind of clothes we need to purchase and preferences for the same.Anything that helps one to reduce the flow of thoughts is immensely spiritual…
We can remain nude @home and at other places with like minded people; that would enable us to evolve and understand the spiritual benefits of being nude in a group; there might be some initial excitation getting to see people naked, that would go away in due course of time.
Being naked does not mean that we get involved in a sexual act. It might happen according to the situation (as otherwise! nothing to feel bad about it; only if one can remain without loosing the vital energy, that would make it a spiritual experience) but it need not translate into sex, and that will be wonderful as well.
Many of our deeper experiences take us closer to higher states of consciousness. Our true nature is happiness and that’s why every human being seek pleasure in the world.
Two (subtle) things we need to be conscious about:
Need to be watchful or alert about what is happening within us at sub conscious level; we have to just pay attention; this awareness/ witnessing has to be there all the time, whatever activities we may be performing in the world…
Secondly, need to train ourselves, not to look back (to the extent possible) at the acts that we have done / events that have happened earlier. That way, we avoid getting to past and we get stabilized in the present moment. And, if we can do that, then anything that we do in the present would make us intensely spiritual…
