On GoScandinavia I found a few great resources about nudism in Sweden, but also the other Scandinavian countries.
Here is part of the text that’s on the page:
Swedes are open-minded and many like to swim or sunbathe in the nude. Nudism in Sweden is nothing unusual and Swedes make it clear that the purpose of nudism/naturism is stricly non-erotic and non-sexual. One prejudice is that Sweden is all about sex and nudism (which is incorrect.) This closed-minded prejudice stems from early teachings about sex in Swedish schools.
Nudism in Sweden can be practiced at the many nude beaches in Sweden. If you want to visit a dedicated nude beach in Sweden, you can find the one closest to your destination using our maps of nude beaches. These great nude beaches are especially popular amongst nudists:
When on a nude hike and you run into textiles, stay calm, nude and friendly. After all, a nudist has nothing to hide, and usually clothed people are scared more of what they see than the nudist hikers. It gives us the edge.
Oh, and if you know good places to hike in the nude, wherever in the world, would you mind sharing? The more places we know, the easier it is for us all!
Granted, it’s not a big sandy affair, there’s just grass and a man-made lake, but it’s our local nude beach. Yesterday the weather was amazing for a change (spring has been quite disappointing so far) so I put some stuff in a bag, added sun-block (never forget sun-block, please) and made my way out.
It wasn’t very busy yesterday, about a dozen people in all, but that was enough to have some interesting conversations and meet a few nice people.
I hardly can wait to go back there – or visit one of the other places around.
In a Dutch town there was an action against discarding the local nude beach. (Report in Dutch here.)
A most interesting part in this article is:“Strafwet. De strafwet staat bloot recreëren overal toe, zolang anderen zich daar niet aan storen.”
Criminal Law. Criminal law allows nude recreation everywhere, as long as others don’t take offence.
Now that’s something I didn’t know. Basically this says you’re allowed to go nude anywhere as long as you’re not bothering others. Quite cool!
This webpage for a Dutch naturist area (in Dutch of course) explains that the law article where this is detailed is number 430a. Most important part: “Het wetsartikel 430a maakte naaktrecreatie dus mogelijk op alle plaatsen die voor ongeklede recreatie geschikt zijn. In het algemeen zijn dit plaatsen waar geen openbaar verkeer langs komt.”
Law article 430a therefore enables nude recreation in all places that are suited for clothes-free recreation. In general these are places where no public traffic passes by.
(Public traffic here needs to be seen also as pedestrians and cyclists of course, not just cars.)
Another website (maintained by a lawyer), “Strict in criminal law” (Scherp in strafrecht) states: “Of een plaats voor naaktrecreatie geschikt is, wordt bepaald door plaatselijke omstandigheden en de redelijkheid.”
Whether or not an area is suitable for nude recreation is decided by the local circumstances and reason.
Which makes sense of course. With public awareness that nude recreation is more and more common, there would nothing against finding a silent/secluded spot in a forest and drop all clothes there for a while. Doing so in the middle of a town will certainly be frowned up (and that would be the least), so with these things in mind, the possibilities for nude recreation in the Netherlands become quite a lot more extensive.
A lot of people are nude around their own house but don’t consider themselves to be “nudists”. Typically it is because they misunderstand what the term means.
Some people believe what the porn and conservative religious groups define nudism as — lust-filled, hedonistic voyeurs and exhibitionists that engage in orgies and all kinds of public sex. That’s just a flat out lie so the porn industry can make money and religious groups can maintain control.
Nudists are simply more comfortable nude. They don’t see the nude human body as inherently sexual or lewd. Sometimes they are comfortable nude around others (social nudists), but sometimes they prefer to be nude alone or with their family at home (home nudists).
What are you? Are you comfortable being nude around your own home? Then you are a home nudist. Are you comfortable nude around others? Then you are a social nudist!
If you are a home nudist but haven’t given social nudism a try, you should. There are many people like you out here who are looking for wholesome, family-friendly nude recreation with others like yourself!
Make a resolution to try nudism in 2013. If you don’t, you might look back later and regret not taking a chance!
I often wonder what it is about nudity that so many people get worked up about it. There is nothing new about nudity, people have been born nude since the beginning of mankind. When you take a shower or bath, you take your clothes off. When you have sex, you usually do that too. Everyone knows there is a naked you under your clothes, and yet when you go about and actually show it, most people react shocked, appalled and cry bloody murder, if not worse.
What’s the reason for that? Religious objections about nudity? I think that has a lot to do with it. Look at what the Christian bible says about that, when Adam and Eve ate a ‘forbidden’ apple. Suddenly they were ashamed of their naked bodies, covered themselves and got themselves kicked out of a nice place. Who declared that was the right thing to do? Freedom of speech was probably not an item in those days…
Naked Adam, naked Eve
Of course it is understandable, when mankind started shedding their hair, they had to dress up to keep themselves warm. Freezing to death is hardly the fun thing to do. But when the weather’s fine and clothes are only used to prevent people from seeing the real you…
Who hasn’t experienced a tremendously hot summer where every bit of clothing you wear is too much? I once heard someone say: “All I had on was the light.”
Who needs clothes in Africa?
People who visit saunas and nudist/naturist camps have a smarter idea about that. Why get all worked up with that shame thing that is forced onto everyone?
Naturism back then
Don’t be afraid of your own nudity. It is normal. Natural. Natural, yes, as everyone comes into nature naked. I’ve never seen a tree that grows clothes. The whole taboo on nudity is wrong, and also accounts for a lot of the perverted things that are happening in our day and age. If people would accept the naked human body for what it is, the thrill of the ‘forbidden fruit’ would fall away. I am quite convinced of that.
There is nothing to be ashamed of, unless you choose to. But before you choose, ask yourself if you really feel the way you feel about nudity, or if it is the result of what society has pushed onto you. And be honest with yourself.
Do you sometimes walk around in your house whilst not wearing anything? Going around naked as on the moment you were born?
If so, you might be surprised to hear that you’re not allowed to just like that. If you walk by a window in your naked glory and someone from the street looks inside and sees you, that person can file a complaint against you for indecent exposure. Even when you’re in your own house! It doesn’t mean you’ll get arrested and thrown in jail, but there’s a good chance you get a warning from the police.
Now I have to add that I am not sure if this is true everywhere, but there are many places and countries where this is a fact. When you want to sit in your garden and feel the sunshine on all of your skin, you need to make sure that none of your neighbours can see you that way for the same reason. And don’t think that a good fence will be enough: if someone can see you from their upstairs rooms you’re at fault too.
Isn’t that dumb? No matter how liberated the world at large wants to feel, we’re constricted in our freedom by a morality forced upon us by a bunch of people who feel that nakedness is not a natural state of being. The more because it is a natural state of being. I have yet to hear about a baby being born with a diaper on…
